Through my work as a diabetes health counselor and educator, I am devoted to honoring the memory of my father. My father developed type I diabetes when he was 5 years old. 2 weeks after his 9 year old sister developed it. My father had a tough time of it. Dying at age 39, his short life presented me with a script of how not to tend to the body-mind-spirit.

My father experienced the “worst case scenario” of the diabetes experience.

  • By the time I was 9 years old, my father was undergoing massive laser surgery to attempt to reverse retinopathy.
  • By the time I was 12, he went through heart surgery, heart attack and was “legally blind.”
  • The last 4 years of my fathers life, he went through constant agony and excrutiating pain.
  • I vividly remember the amputation of his leg and the post op experience of crying for morphine.”
